Intraplate seismicity and earthquake hazard in the Aravalli–Delhi Fold Belt, India

چکیده
The Aravalli–Delhi Fold Belt (ADFB) is one of three prominent ridges on the continental part Indian plate extending northward from central India and subducting beneath Himalayan arc. Though it seismogenic along its entire NE–SW structural trend, activity varies spatially with a noteworthy region higher seismicity in vicinity Delhi. We analyse historical modern instrumented seismicity. Using recomputed focal mechanisms for events such as 1956 Bulandshahr earthquake, we found that maximum principal stress (σ1) this oriented N–S to direction, similar neighbouring Garhwal–Kumaun Himalayas. Our analysis also indicates earthquakes ADFB occur steep faults which are parallel or oblique trend crust appears be seismically active up depth ~40 km. Within better Delhi region, observed pattern average monthly frequency recorded speculate was modulated by monsoonal recharge local water table. cause AFDB still question debate, pending seismological geodetic instrumentation, but build evolutionary models suggest consequence continued relative motion between Bundelkhand Marwar cratons northern shield. nature causes notwithstanding, proximity large cities Delhi, Jaipur Udaipur poorly-studied unknown sources seismic hazard concern warrants further scientific policy intervention.

Special Section: Intraplate Seismicity
Re-evaluated intensity distributions for the 1897 Mw 8.0 Shillong and the 1905 Mw 7.8 Kangra earthquakes, combined with geodetic constraints on rupture geometries, allow us to compare observed distributions of intensity with theoretically predicted shaking. The difference between predicted and observed shaking is interpreted in terms of the site response of the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins. Th...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Complexity of Continental Intraplate Seismicity: Insights from Geodynamic Modeling and Implications for Seismic Hazard Estimation
Continental intraplate seismicity seems often episodic, clustered, and migrating. The observed seismicity shows both spatial clustering in seismic zones and scattering across large plate interiors, temporal clustering followed by long periods of quiescence, and migration of seismicity from one seismic zone to another. Here, we explore the complex spatiotemporal patterns of intraplate seismicity...
متن کاملHigh - Resolution Seismicity Study of the Yakima Fold and Thrust Belt Region , Washington
This report presents the final results from this contract to analyze the seismicity of the Yakima Fold and Thrust Belt (YFTB) region, Washington (Figure 1). The contract work involved the following: Apply conventional seismic tomography, using the public domain code simul2000 (Thurber and Eberhart-Phillips, 1999), to the YFTB region (121.25°W to 117.5°W and 45.5°N to 47.5°N) dataset of approxim...
متن کاملAnalyzing seismicity hazard in Boinzahra, Qazvin and Hamedan zones
Today analyzing seismicity hazard urban different areas is critical and inevitable due to develop and to expand cities in seismically active zones and naturally, the hazard because the earthquake is more in the bigger cities and the necessity to consider these hazards would be increased. Expanding the cities in Iran seismically active zones caused to be necessary to analyze earthquake hazard. B...
متن کاملSeismicity and Seismic Hazard of Northeastern Nevada
The February 21, 2008, Wells earthquake (MW=6.0) occurred in a region of northeastern Nevada where the seismicity has historically been low relative to western Nevada. In a region of area of approximately10 5 km 2 of northeastern Nevada, based rates of smaller earthquakes in the region prior to 2008, earthquakes of MW=6.0 or larger are expected with a rate of about 0.01 per year. The probabilit...
